Absolute Threshold Field

Absolute Threshold Field explores proxemics, a concept developed by anthropologist Edward T. Hall to describe how individuals use and perceive space in social interaction. Presented across three synchronised screens, the work uses the cinematic conventions of the full shot, medium shot, and close-up to reconfigure Hall’s intimate, personal, social, and public distances.

Each viewpoint positions the viewer differently in relation to the same encounter, moving between observation, proximity, and intrusion. Together, the films register the emotional states of both the person whose boundary is crossed and the person who crosses it, revealing the tension and vulnerability that emerge when invisible spatial boundaries are breached.

Rather than treating personal space as a fixed measurement, the work presents it as a fragile psychological threshold, continually negotiated through looking, proximity, and power.
